Question about rack placement

rudedogsurfrat Nov 26, 2003 08:44 AM

I was thinking about placing a rack in the closet. Alot of info suggests that it is good for maintaining warmth to put them in an enclosed area. I was wondering if this was ok especially for the health of the snakes. I would use lamps on timers for light cycling.

I've kept racks in two different closets and it generally worked well. Fortunately in both cases there was enough room to use a space heater safely without getting it too close to the walls.

The main issue I had was that my vertical heat gradient was dramatically amplified. In one situation this was not a problem since I had a variety of snake species at the time and was able to put the less heat tolerant species on the bottom of the rack and vice versa. In the other example I had all the same species in a 6' tall rack and struggled to keep the specimens on the bottom warm enough while not over-heating the specimens on the top.

Odor does build up more quickly, suggesting a lack of ventilation. I made sure to leave the doors open with a fan running for an hour or so several times per week.
