First of all will you be in a dorm? Some don't allow pets. Second, if you plan on havin music or parties or lots of traffic around, snakes are a not a good idea. Third, snakes can not tolerate much handling so taking it all over for warmth ect. is a BAD idea. They are nothing like lizards and at best will simply tolerate handling. Many lizards, especially like the beardies, are content to sit with you for hours. Snakes on the other hand usually don't do this, especially "small, native species." Andy

How about a Florida Kingsnake. They are beautiful snakes I might add!! I saw one in a pet store when I was in Florida for vacation. They also had a bearded dragon that I wanted, to bad my parents aren't into reptiles.

I'm a freshman living in the dorms right now too. All year I was strongly considering getting a snake, but I decided to wait till I move in an apartment or condo next year. The reason? My dorm is way too bright, loud, and smokey at most hours for a snake to thrive in. Reptiles can tolerate music and people, but only so much. So if I were you, I'd wait till you meet your roommate and get settled in so you can see if your dorm is a suitable environment for a snake.

That being said, a corn or a rat snake might work good for you. They are pretty easy to take care of, don't take up much space (key for a dorm!) etc.

A corn or a Florida King would be widely available as captive born snakes and would be inexpensive as well as being hardy.

This is a really bad idea. Snakes don't need to "get sun" and can enjoy the "warmth" more comfortably in its cage (in fact, you will have to make an effort to keep it cool). I'm not sure what the other "stuff" would be?

In fact, taking a snake out and parading it around campus could be
a. against campus rules.
b. stressful to the snake due to the high temperatures.
c. stressful to the snake due to the excess attention it would get.

If you are looking for something to attract attention to yourself as you walk around campus, take up juggling, get a unicycle, wear strange clothes, whatever, just don't abuse a snake for the attention.
