My First Ball Python Questions Food & Humidity

Bergertone Nov 26, 2003 10:11 AM

I just got a male Het, born this past July, the breeder said feed him in a couple days. I tried to give him a freshley killed mouse as requested by the breeder, but he did not take it. I will try again this week.

Questions one. Can I put the not eaten mouse in the freezer and try to feed it to him after I try to convert him to frozen/thawed in a couple months.
Is there a correct way to freeze it?
How long do they last frozen?
What it the correct way to thaw a frozen mouse?

Question two. My holding tank is a AVI reptile tank 36"x18" x18", a 100w Day Glo bulb, Exo-Terra Heatwave under the tank. Day time Aprox. 90F on hot side, 80F on cool side. 80F and 70F at night. The humidity is pretty dry in there (25). What are some good natural looking items to bring it up. The X-large Exo-Terra water bowl is on the cold side of tank.

Thanks-

you need to raise it up around 50-60
you can do this by putting a small water dish under the heat lamp
or just closer to the hot side of the tank that will bring it up

Congrats on the new buy! Hope you enojy it! How big is it? What is it Het for?

I don't know anything about feeding pre killed food items, but a big question is has your Ball eaten before? There are TONS of websites with Ball Python feeding info.

The enclosure sounds great, that will serve the Ball throughout his entire life.

To raise humidity you can:
*Cover a portion of the top of the tank to keep the humidity in
*Put a water bowl under the heat source
*Use a waterfall
*Mist the tank daily

I use the waterfall, it looks great. I also have covered a portion of the tank's screen lid as well. I am just like you... wanting a nice, natural looking home for my snakes.

Good luck and keep us posted! Pics maybe?

dont even waste your time on a waterfall its somthing more you have to clean and you dont even need it. Just mist the cage twice a day and cover half of the screen top (if it has one)....i have an aquarium for mine and the humidity never goes below 65%

The constant vibrations caused by the water fall can be very annoying to the snake. Do without the waterfall if you can.

I have been misting to get it up to 50. I just went out and purchased another small shallow water dish. I'll see how that does. The waterfalls look pretty cool, do the pumps make a lot of noise?

The waterfall makes a great visual.

My snakes love to climb, sleep and drink on it.

With ample substrate the vibration is negligible. With the variable settings on the pump, I have almost no noise.

I use the exoterra small waterfall. The others seemed too space intensive.

Het Albino means it is heterozygously genetic for Albino (a recessive gene). If it is indeed 100% Het Albino, it means that there is 50% chance of passing on the gene.

Also, as was mentioned elsewhere, when bred with another 100% Het Albino, you get: 25% Albino, 50% Het, 25% Normal.

It is a great snake if you plan to breed.

Oh yea, Het to what? Albino. I am new to snake keeping so I am not even sure what Het means, thats what the breeder told me, who I trust.
I have been keeping a Hermanns Tortoise for four years and my daoghter showed an interest in a snake, so we researched and settled on a Bal Python.

if indeed its a 100% het...if you breed it to another 100% het you have 25% albino, 25% normal and 50% het's. i think.
