glueing/cementing rocks together.

ladysharon Nov 26, 2003 11:50 AM

Hi. Does anyone have any ideas on what product I can use to glue or cement rocks together?

The product needs to be non toxic when dry, and useable indoors when wet. (ie some fumes but not overwelming.)

oh and superglue doesn't work.

I'm asking people who have had experince createing natural enviroments useing rocks... I have seen some stuff on here before on it.

Thank you.

PS. Anyone that answers I'm going to say: "have you used it before and what where the results" so please don't just say... have you tryed such and such. I want a product that others have used and had work. I don't want to waste my money on just "suggestions"

100% Silicone has worked for me in the past. Even on sandstone-type rocks that don't accept adhesives well.

::"have you used it before and what where the results"::

I was very good, although I'm not sure I'd trust it for a large varanid or boid. (BTW, you should have included what species this is for, that is very relevant).

Silicone has a strong acetic acid smell while setting up but I do not find it overwhelming.

The biggest problem with silicone is that you have to pick your rocks so that there is pretty good contact between them. You don't want the silicone to be much more than 1/4" thick.

For larger species I've used elasticized mortar. Also works very well but can be dusty. It is better for when there are large gaps between the areas of the rocks you want to attach together.

I agree with chris's answers.
But to add a little to his what type of rocks are we talking ?
there are several type morters that can be used as well as grouts to bond the rocks together and depending on the type of rock you are wanting to bond would depened on my answer as to what to use .My experience in bonding rocks comes from my Remodeling buisness and installing rock on fireplaces , and floors that are all still there today

I never used it in cage building, but when I worked at Wal Mart, we used Liquid Nails to build displays out of bricks. Worked great and held VERY well.

Hi again!

Thanks for the replys. Unfortuantly I was ill and couldn't reply back when I wanted to.

This is for a bearded dragon. I got the rocks from a bulk place and throually sterilized them. (just an fyi) these are just med. size uh... general *rocks* not sandstone... I guess... granete? You know the type of rocks you see as landscapeing. I just went through the piles there looking for the flatest ones...

I have it pretty stable I just want to glue/cement some together to make the arrangement more so.
