Question from someone who knows nothing about RES

Chameleon996 Nov 26, 2003 05:05 PM

A friend of mine recently purchased two RES's. I don't know anything about them, I personally stick to lizards. He asked me to find out what is wrong with one of them. He said it is kind of coughing ( I didn't know that turtles could cough ) and has white stuff coming out of it's mouth. I'm sorry if this is vauge information, but I do research BEFORE purchasing an animal and it makes me mad when my friends don't.

You are mostly likely looking at something like a respiratory infection, which for turtles are very serious. They most often are caused by inappropriate and insufficient set-ups....like not having the right water temps, no basking spot to get out of the water, no heat lamp to warm the basking spot, etc. When symptoms are as you described, that means that it probably now a more severe infection.

Your friend needs to take the turtle to a vet asap if it is going to survive, and also needs to check over his set up and make sure it completely satisfies all of the turtle's basic needs to stay healthy. (Basking area & light, proper diet, temperatures, filtration to keep the tank clean, UVB lighting, etc.)
