In my opinon I think the school of thought has changed.
Back in the day........I think breeders were "heavier" with females than males. I think their hopes were that one male could do the job on a lot of females. But, I think time/personal experience has shown them that. 1)Females had a very high slug ratio. 2)A male that didn't want to breed that year for some reason. Etc.
I think more than not......People have more males than females.
1)This helps out when your one male doesn't want to breed. I've had this happen. It stinks!! Here you have a nice big female just waiting to be bred and the male wants nothing to do with her.
2)When the male takes a break you can thrown another male in for a short period.
I think the only down fall to this is when you are trying to selectively breed certain animals. You really need to watch who's doing what.
Hope this helps.

1)Stimulation of the sex drive. Some boas require a little more competition to get them in the mood for love, while others just seem to go with the flow naturally. Some people use another male for combat to get stimulation going.
2)This one actually goes hand in hand with the first one.Having extra males is always a good idea just in case one doesnt feel like getting the job done.To me this is the best choice for breeding than combat but some still do the combat theory and are sucessful with the attempts but i wouldnt recommend it unless you have had previous experience. From what i've heard and saw from pics it can get rather nasty quick.
In pythons it seems to be right the opposite, more females to males ratio.Take b/ps for instance.Since they dont lay as many eggs, having more than one female comes in handy.Their clutch size usually goes to about 5-6 eggs so having more than one gravid female is always a good idea (especially in business).Even with the bigger snakes like retics, burms, anacondas, etc.it usually takes only the one male to female ratio for some odd reason.I've not personally heard of anyone having to use another male to stimulate the sex drive although it probably does happen from time to time.Kinda weird how a pythons sex drive is a little more active than some boas.
