Design for hexagonal tank lids

triturus Nov 27, 2003 06:25 AM

I have two ten gallon hexagon tanks that I want to make lids for in order to keep Uroplatus. I have cut some stainless steel screen to fit the 12 inch tops of the tanks, but I need a frame material that I can attach to the screen using silicon sealer (to the frame, not the tank). Any suggestions for a readily obtained, economic material (other than wood)?

If you go to a plastic or glass shop you could probably get scrap acrylic and then cut it into narrow strips. Other small pieces could be solvent welded over the joints to hold the pieces together.

Many different plastics would work.

Hi, i don't know if this will work or not but when i was out looking for the plastic stuff to make sliding glass doors (saw it in an aquarium shop in a tank with doors, the bottom had one slot for the glass while the top had two slots for two pieces of glass to fit and slide back and forth) I never did find any of that stuff, BUT i did fine L shaped plastic moulding. I imagine you could cut the pieces to fit the top of the tank and siliocne them together in the appropriate shape. Or you could heat up the spot where the corner of the tank is, and bend the plastic. It was at the local hardware/lumber store but i'm sure you could get it at Home Depot. I've never tried either suggestion though. I have the same tank, only a glass top and a screen top came with it. I had my crested gecko in it for the longest time until he discovered.....top comes off when food goes in, i can try to escape LOL. He's now in a larger tank witha screen top with a door.

Hope that helps

Depending on the tools you have available

1- if you have something to cut angle iron you could form a hexagon by cutting only one side of the angle in a 22.5 degree angle then making the proper bend untill they meet each other repaet that until you form your hexagon . then find a weld shop to spot weld the joints for you .

2-look in the homedepot / lowes in there section that carries acoustical ceiling supplies . they will have a thinner agle there comes in 12" lengths .This can be easily done as above but only making ONE cut on the 22.5 degree side and forming it back untill it overlaps itself . then by using a rivet gun fasten them together until you make the hexagon.and depending on the screen you have you could also rivet or silicone it into the bottom side of the frame .
