Making a door in a screen top???

RedQuake Nov 27, 2003 09:24 AM

I have a 40 gallon tank with a solid screen top. The top is very tight fitting and very hard to get off to get to my geckos. I want to install two doors into the top but i'm unsure of what materials to use and how to go about it. Any suggestions? I think once i find and make the door and frame for it, the instilation will be easy as i can either use silicone or spot weld (if the door material is metal).

Any help is greatly appreciated

well since you mentioned spot weld i will assume you have a welder ?

i would look at hopedepot / lowes and get some flat metal 1/2"-3/4" wide cut it to your desired opening size you would take two pieces on each side like top & bottom then you could pre drill and use a rivet gun to fasten the two sides sandwiching the scren between the two frames. the repeat that step for the door fram using the screen you will cut out of the frame work hole. then sandwich that screen between the two pieces for the door. Then pick up a piano hinge and rivet it to the door frame . if you have access to a welder ( you said you could spot weld it ) then spot weld the four corners of the door frame to make it rigid then all you need is a clasp to rivet to the door & frame ...viola .. door for screened top .

Thats great thankyou. I don't personally have the welder my dad does (but i'm increasing my tool collection as much as i can, whenever i can hehehe). The way you explained that is just what i needed. I did go out today to an exotic pet shop (always love to look around when i'm up that way) and they have a screen top with two doors in it for $50.00 Can. Not exactly something i want to spend that much money on, so if i can do it myself in the screen i already have thats what i'm going to do.

Thanks again
