now a 6. something mega-pixel ?......

just how far can they go with mega-pixels on a camera ?. Or, when does the mega-pixel meet up with the human eye ? Surely it can't surpass what the human eye can see or take in.

The Kodak 14n has around 12mp and Leica announce a 22mp digital back recently. I don't see much value in super high resolution if one will be printing 8x10 sizes or smaller. When you want to move into the 20"x30" sizes, those pixels all count! Plus, if you want to severly crop an image and then blow the resultant back up, the need for more pixels becomes evident very quickly.

I think the tonal range is the limiting factor right now. The high-end DSLR cameras have the same approximate range of slide film - roughly about 4 to 5 stops. That means that if you are in an area with lots of shadows as well as bright highlights, you have to expose for one or the other or take two exposures and blend them or let one of the ranges go out. Film has a lot more dynamic range to work with when faced with these situations.

Digital imaging is still in it's infancy. Like the early days of PC's, improvements in the technology will come quickly, and the prices will come down. It was only a few years ago that the digital SLR cameras were over $20,000. Now you can get a DSLR that is much advanced from those models for around a grand.
