HOW SAFE WOULD THIS BE???? housing chameleons together?

cv768 Nov 27, 2003 11:49 AM

We have safely housed a breeding pairs of veileds, jacksons, old worlds, and panthers.....just one male and one female per tank...how safe would it be to try that with a few females in the tank with a male??? (Only same species in a tank of course)

I think I might try it either way but I was curious to hear any suggestions or precautions....

by tanks i hope you mean screen cages ... and no, i would not do that because it can be dangerous for your chams health (stress, attacks, etc)
it has been done by some people, but imho, i would never do this

All of our enclosures are screen on all sides.

Sorry to hear you house pairs together. Stress can kill. Just how do you know that your chams are not stressing? What you perceive as being acceptable may not be. These animals do not co-habitate together in the wild so why would being together in captivity be any different?

Just our 2 cents

No fights and no stress related problems such as eating disorders. The thing we've never tried is keeping more than one female with a male. Or two females by themselves.

In that sized cage, you could keep a trio of jacksons - or 2 female veiled. But not all chams are compatible... so you have to watch carefully.

Stress symptoms are not limited to eating disorders. Some chams will cower in the presence of another - and others get fighting mad. It all depends on the animal.

I wouldn't keep a trio of veiled or panthers together in that sized cage. We have one panther in a 7ft x 5ft x 3ft - and he is by himself! He just didn't like the 4ft cages. And we only put a female in there for breeding, then remove her.

If you have a pair in a cage and they are getting along - don't upset the apple cart by introducing a stranger.

Hope this helps,
