i woke up and more of my mealies turned into aliens!! and 1 of my aliens turned into a beetle!! and there are several mealies hanging out on top of the substrate that are fat, look like they are shrinking and curling, and won't crawl away when i turn on the light... a few of them... turning into aliens! even the left over one in the food dish is turning into an alien! i'm happy... i remember i used 2 freak out about finding a mealworm beetle, but now that i'm trying to breed, i LOVE finding them

i hope i get more aliens tonight! my mealworm colony is starting!! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

lol

Congrats on the mealies. They are fairly easy to breed. I have been for a little over a year now. I usually have a group of 500 beetles going at once now. The key to breeding them is burlap. I don't know why but once I tried this, the mealies did everything else themselves. I keep mine on a bed of unmedicated chick starter mash, and put a few pieces of burlap over that. Water is provided through "EZ WATER". Pretty basic as long as you have the time to grow the mealies up. It's usually between 2 and 3 months from when you put the beetles in until the mealies are full size. GOOD LUCK

thanks mike!

it's crazy coz the whole day i kept getting some. last night i had 5, this morning i had 11, and now i have 20 aliens i'm excited... hehe~ i was gonna try 2 use laying mash (i was told those are better), but the nearest feed store that i know if is about 45 minutes away up in the hills... lol i've been keeping my mealies on wheat germ, wheat bran, oatmeal, fish flakes, iguana feed, trex sandfire cricket gutload, and insect gutload. i also use a carrot and replace it every few days. sometimes i use the cricket quenchers with calcium i'll see how the burlap thing goes- thanks for your advice and i'll let you know how it works out! take care and happy thanksgiving
