Is there anyway to stop brumation...?

RaffertyReptiles Nov 27, 2003 01:05 PM

I don't know what the deal is with my bearded dragon i've had him for 2 years and hes never before wanted to brumate. He sits like underneath this log in his all day and i'll pick him up and put him under his basking spot and he'll like hang out there get all energized then eat but the next morning he'll be back under the log. I was thinking that maybe the temps in the cage are getting too cold at night and he goes to the floor of the cage and gets under the log to stay warm and in the morning he doesn't have enough energy to get back up to the basking spot, is that possible. I check the temps when i go to bed and they say like low 70's so i don't know maybe they get real low at like 3 or 4 in the morning or something? any advice is a appeciated thanks

typically, there isn't really any way to stop it..except to increase the length of time his lights are on, the intensity of light and make sure the temps don't go below 75F at night (staying between 75-80F at night). Even this may not make any difference and sometimes you just have to let him brumate. Think of it this way, you won't have to worry about food for a month or two. However, I recommend getting a fecal done and weigh him to make sure nothing else could be wrong.
