MacArthur Nov 27, 2003 01:41 PM

I'm looking for some ideas for freddy. at X-mas I'll be getting a 20 long to decorate so he isn't so cramted and can explore also, can I use lizard litter for a substrate??? because i've got him on some VERY fine grade sand and some smothed out bark over the head pad so it does't burn his belly. thanks Mac. A.
It might be a while before I can get some pics of his setup or of him.

Thanks

i don't ahve a working camera, so i don't have any pictures of my setup, but i can tell you about it. i have (right now) two adult females in my 20L. jeeves (or 'big mama jeeves,' i haven't weighed her, but she is gargantuan), my first leopard, a normal/circleback, and myrtle, my second, who's a snow (she may be smaller than jeeves, but she doesn't take no sass, hehe).

so- originally i had it filled with a mix of diferent colors of calci-sand, it looked very natural. however, i realized, for me, paper towel (which i had in my other tanks), works better, so i just switched over to that. i'm actually surprised how nice it still looks. I have a red lightbulb in a lamp over the left side of the tank (the warm side), which i leave on 24/7. i also have two 5-gallon size uths, right next to each other (on the left side), because i initially bought the wrong size when i first got jeeves. so, i have a humid hide made out of an emptied, upturned cool-whip tub, with sponges at the bottom, on the end farthest from the uths, against the back of the tank. i cut the entrance out of the side (don't make it too big, or they might feel insecure- i had to make a second one because myrtle wouldn't use it). i have a comercially made little rock-thing hide near the hot end of the tank, against the back of the tank, for a warm hide. the thing that my geckoes are WILD about is the large-size (not medium size, large had a picture of a blue-tongued skink on it, medium has a leo) magnetic hide. um, shucks, i forget the exact name, but it's the thing that goes against the front of the tank , and has a magnetic bit on the other side, that you can pull off, to view your bebes without disturbing them too much. with the large size, my girls can either pick a level of that to chill in, or even pile in the same level (there are two levels in the large). they love it, i highly recommend them (and the viewing part of it is nice too). mine is about in the middle of the tank, a little on the colder side. in addition to that, i have their water dish next to the humid hide, against the back of the tank, with their food dish next to that. they have one large grapevine branch that is sort of tangled throughout the tank, which jeeves even climbs sometimes! and on the warm end of the tank, against the side, i have their calcium dish.

aww- i went to go check & see if i left anything out, and jeeves is just hanging out right next to her magnetic hide. jeeves is very mellow, she has no problem being out & about in her tank around me. anyways- i hope i gave you some nice ideas. sorry i don't have any pics. my main recommendation is to get one of those magnetic-view hides. and i'd recommend getting a large size, if you are ever going to have more than one gecko in there. have fun!

Here's my 20-long. The substrate is sanded floor tile that looks like slate.

I love that tile. Where did you get it? (This is where I cross my fingers and hope you say 'Home Depot somewhere in Canada').

Sanded tile? What's the difference between normal tile and sanded tile? (and forget the shiny bathroom tile. I know not to use that.)

Thanks,

Hi!

I did get it at home depot (in michigan, not canada, heh) And when i say sanded, i mean i actually physically sanded it myself with sandpaper. I thought it was a little too slick, so i sanded it to give them better traction i guess you would call it One thing about it, is for the first few days it did give off a smell from being heated with the heat pad. not strong, not bad, just from the vinyl heating up. But after a day or so it was gone, and they have all been fine on it so far. I've had them on it since last feb or march with no ill effects.
