Can you truly cut flexwatt to any length you want?

Jamison Nov 28, 2003 12:03 AM

i see on bigappleherp.com they say you can cut it to any length. But ive read in some other places you can only cut between the heating elements (the clear plastic) i need 6 1/2 feet of it, so i need to know if i can cut on in half and no malfunctions??

Well this becomes kind of a wierd situation.
You can cut the lengths to be any length you want, as long as its around a foot long. If you cut between the zig-zagged black stipes the chances are you will cut one of the black stripes and have problems, or the flex watt will not work and over heat the heating elements possibly further causing problems.
I would not try to cut anything like a 1/2' length. It just doesnt seem safe. If your trying to cut a 1' length down to like 11" then well you can cut it close to the end.
All in all, i wouldn't cut the black zig-zagged heating strips or in between them. Just folding the flex watt might be safer.

If you still want to try to cut the flex watt, just Email BigAppleHerp and ask them if you can do it. They have been very helpfull when i've dealt with them via email.

I cut the 11"-wide Flexwatt to lengths like 18 inches or whatever, not on the cut lines. It works fine, and there is no reason why it shouldn't. The only potential problem is electric shock to you if you don't seal the cut end with electrical tape.

The 11" wide can be cut in 1 ft increments, but the 3-4" wide can be cut to just about any length because you actually cut through the heating element wherever you want. There are cut lines on the 11" every foot.

You can cut the 11-inch wide anywhere you want. The exposed end must be insulated the entire width of the flexwatt (11 inches in this case.) I have pieces cut at odd lengths running fine for years. You just need to be safe and smart about it. Beginners should never cut between designated cut marks though.
