I have an embarrassing question....

shopaholic Nov 28, 2003 02:49 AM

about Cham poo poo. I'm a newbie trying to do research before I plunge. One aspect that I can't find anything written about is the size, frequency, messiness of waste from a cham. You see, I used to have birds and though I loved them dearly, the mess they'd make while out on their perch made the care go up a few levels. When your Cham is out, just how messy is the waste in comparison to Bird dropping? Is it formed and more like a rabbit dropping, or more like a bird "splat"? And if I go get my Cham to take it outside for a sunning, will he likely urinate on me as my Frogs do? I know, silly questions, but believe it or not it is a factor in my considerations as far as whether I'm cut out to be a Cham owner. Thanks for your input. Maggie

acually we have had very long threads discussing chameleon poop

anywayss chams poop in like a an oval shape. it hardens and drys on the cage floor so clean up is easy. and they seem only go in one general area in the cage so they are sortof pooty trained by instinct(if you want me to get into that write agian)

so he wont poop on you and the urin comes out when the poop does so you dont need to worry abou that either.

also my jacksons tend to go depeneding on how much they ate so i cant tell you the feuqancy but the jacksons little "oval" is about a half inche long i think.

I have found that the mess is very minimal. I have a budgie and he makes enough mess for a whole house full of animals, not to metion a big 90 pound rotti pup who does his fair share, and then the cats who get into everything that the dog knocks around. So in comparison, give me my Cham anyday. I clean his cage every other day and every 4 days really well, in thses couple of days theres not that much poop.

And like in the other reply to your message they are hard little ovals with the urates (thats the pee) that are a almost solid white poop. they do both at the same time. It dries and is very easy to clean. Kinda like bird poop but its not flung about the house every where.

When I take my cam out to sit on his basking perch tree, I just put paper towel or newspapers down around it. He goes in the same spot everytime.

Hope this helps yah a little.

never be embarrased about having a question! This is certainly a valid one in light of other pets poop habits! LOL!

As has been mentioned it is infrequent (once a day?) and does tend to be in the same spot. It comes out moist and sort of slimy (ew!) so I think most of us wait until it dries up and them remove it. They are big! I couldn't belive the size of Luna's when I first got her compared to my anoles and geckos!!
She has never pooped when I had her out of the cage.

Don't hesitate to ask questions, remember: the only stupid question is the one you never ask!

p.s. do a search on the forums for "poop" and you will be amazed at some of the threads and photos! LOL!

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but chams poops do have a smell to them, so you will want to clean them up every few days. They do tend to go in the same place as everyone mentioned, so that is good. However, my male has a tendency to go outside the cage occassionally and we find it later. It's a relatively easy clean-up if it is dried. But, just last week I did step in one prior to drying and it made a mess. Yuck!

I agree they smell when they are "fresh." LOL! I just let them dry and try not to disturb it until then and then I remove with forceps (easy pickin's) between cleaning days. There were a couple of recent threads on this very subject...The smell of cham poo!
