Salmonella and Turtles

Anddawede Nov 28, 2003 07:23 AM

I'm sure this has been covered a million times, but whenever I try to read archives and old messages my computer locks up.

Salmonella.... I'm sure Turtles carry it, but can the bacteria harm the carrier? How imperative is it that I have fecal tested for Salmonella? I have a vet appt tomorrow (wellness followup) and they want me to bring fecal in. I had a really bad paycheck today (no overtime at all and lost time because of a doctors appt) and just can't afford any tests right now. I've had my turtle since July 25th and nothing is wrong with him.

Turtles naturally carry salmonella, I think it helps in their digestive process or something. It is not harmful to them, just you.

A fecal would be more to test for intestinal parasites than for salmonella. A salmonella test is not needed in your situation (unless you are immunocompromised?).
