How to make glass top for hex setup?

andersonii85 Nov 28, 2003 11:14 AM

I am trying to setup a 60gal hex for some thumbnails and wanted to put a lid on top that would prohibit their escape. I have decided on placing weather stripping on the top so that I can have a flush fit; however, I can't find anyone to cut the glass top for me. Has anyone tried lexin(sp?) or plexiglass? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have tried with limited success. It tends to warp after time, but if thicker maybe it won't, around 0.25 inch or more? Glass would be much better. Most areas have glass cutting for windows and screens; look under "glass - automotive/plate" in the yellow pages. Give them the exact dimensions or for the hex make a cardboard template and cut where you want the hindge to go. I went with 1/8" glass.

If you look a couple post below made by audiotaylor, in the cobalt topic. He has a bueatiful tank that was a hexagonal tank. He has a wonderful setup, that I will be soon copying for a corner hexagonal tank =D.

Hehe, thanks. Yeah, I just drew up a diagram of how I wanted the glass cut and took it to my local glass cutting place. They did it perfectly and it was cheap (I think 15 bucks) I wouldnt give up on finding a place to cut some glass for you because I have never had a succesful experience with lexan or plexiglass. Talk to you later.

Justin,
Don't give up on the glass. I think you would be happier with it as Lexan (a polycaronate) and Plexiglass (an acrylic) both absorb moisture which causes it to warp. The poly more so than the acrylic and even 1/4" is likely to be effected.

Thanks to all for replying. I am definately going with glass. My friend, who also loves darts, works for a glass company and thinks he can help me out.

Thanks again
