bairdi temperment

How do Bairdi compare with other ratsnakes in terms of temperment?

Bairdi are generally calm and tend not to bite even when handled. Hatchlings may exhibit more energy with regard to hissing and defensive bluffing. Babies may strike at your hand, but bites are uncommon. This juvenile behavior will usually disappear with handling and the resulting adult is calm making it an excellent pet snake. This is their general behavior. Most bairds are calm, but I'm sure there's a few that may have one that's nippy. Even cornsnakes bite. Compared to obsoleta they are more docile. IMHO.

my adult bairds are one of the few snakes in my collection that I can just reach in and grab without knowing where the snake is and not worry about getting bitten. They are puppy dog tame.

I have 2 corns and I want to get into some other Elaphae. Looks like I will start with the Bairds. I love those colors.

I really love bairds rat snakes and they make an excellent snake for your collection. I wrote a spec sheet on bairds that's on my website (see link) if you would like to read. There's also a couple other articles on acquiring a snake, care, and breeding. Feel free to email me if you have any questions on bairds?

>>>>I can only answer from the experience of the two Bairdis I have but they are easy to handle.
They do tend to be a bit more hyper then my corns but less aggresive then the black rats I used to keep.
They have never attempted to bite me but they have been know to "musk" when agitated.
They tend to be tail rattlers too.
All and all I would have to refer to them as easy to handle, easy to care for, dependable feeders and excellent additions to any North American Rat Snake collection.

I have a male LTC Bairdi. Really cool snake. when I first took him from the wild he bit me once and musked on me. He has since calmed down. He is definately a tail rattler, which I think is pretty cool. All I need now is a female so I can have some babies.
