Question about prehensile tailed skinks and internal parasites

jrbl Nov 29, 2003 12:27 AM

Hi,
I have heard PTS have "intestinal flora" that helps them digest cellulose and the like, and I wanted to know if I treated a PTS for bad internal parasites, would the good "intestinal flora" die as well? Would parazap be a good product to treat the parasitical infestation with, or would something a bit more harsh be better? I do not have any skinks at this point, but I want to know, just in case. Thank you for your help, jrbl

It would definitely destroy both beneficial and not so beneficial bacteria. The medication is very harsh and can possible endanger your pet's life. Parazap is not exactly a probiotic. What you need is a probiotic. Acidipholiz is readily available at PetSmart. I believe Bene-bac is another one, but I'm not positive.

Is it not eating and sick? If not I wouldn't treat it except by keeping it at ideal temps, caging clean and a proper stress free enviroment which would include a tall enclosure with climing branches and hide areas (if it's a new W/C PTS keep its cage covered at night and partially during the day) and a good photoperiod. Placing food high up at night time (pothos-washed well-is good for hard to get to eat PTS) and leaving it alone till it comes around, and even a W/C will do fine. But I don't know the circumstances so please forgive me if I'm off base with what you're looking for. Detail helps when posting ?'s about this sort of thing.

I am pretty sure I said in the original post that I do not currently have a PTS, but I am not sure if I said that. I was just curious, so if I had an infested skink, I would know what to do. THanks for the food tip. jrbl
