Small superworms or mealworms?

xelda Nov 29, 2003 01:07 AM

I'm thinking about switching to small superworms as a staple diet for my leopard geckos. Will this be ok? In the smaller sizes, do superworms have the same amount of chitin as mealworms?

Even in smaller sizes supers tend to be more robust than mealies...Mealies are a lot of water and endoskeletal structure but very little protein matter..hence why leo's eat so many mealies when compared to number of supers of the same size. I've switched mostly to a diet of medium to large supers for my leo's and they love it.

I eventually want to get all my leos on the bigger supers as well.

So far, I've only noticed a different reaction in one of my juveniles. He really gets excited about the small supers, because he can hear them before he sees them. None of my other leos seem to care about the change though. They still eat about the same quantity of supers as mealworms.

Just keep in mind that large superworms will not be suitable for smaller leos, or any lizard in general.
They get to be about 2" long and about a 1/4" in diameter. Small ones are fine i'm guessing, don't have any leos my self, but it might get difficult to find a constant supply of small superworms for your juveniles. The larger ones will be too big for juveniles.

Not really.. for Juvies of about 5 months old they aren't too big.. I have one Juvie who, at 5 months, was 7 inches long an d taking full grown supers... I had problems getting him to eat mealies at one point.. switched to small supers but ran out of those.. so he started eating the big ones without a problem.

I agree with Lucien. I started feeding one of my juveniles large supers when he weighed 35 grams. Well, I guess at that size, he's more of a sub-adult.
