Where can I get mice/rat breeding containers...

ThomasHarrison Nov 29, 2003 09:22 AM

I always see them at shows and I picked up a few (5-10 dollars each), but decided I need a few more.

Specifically, they are the plastic containers with the metal topping in which the food and water container are placed on top.

Thanks,

Tom

Well commercial ones seem too expensive. Most people make their own. I make my mice cages from a cat litter box, wood frame, and 1/4" cloth with grommets for the water bottles. The mice sometimes can chew through the litterbox but I fix it with aluminum from a coke can.

Rats can produce on average, 11-18 babies per litter. Female rats come into heat approximately every 5 days. Within 24 hours of giving birth, rats can become pregnant again if the male is housed with her. It's always good to give female rats a few weeks 'rest' between litters to allow her to build up her fat reserves and fully recover. This period of rest should start after her current litter is weaned or otherwise...no longer there.

So,depending on whether you want to rest her or not, a female rat can have a little of babies once a month or once every other month with a resting period. Gestation is 23-25 days.

The best way to remove the stink is regular cleaning of cages, once or twice a week depending on size of the cage and how many adult rats are in it.

you can find them on the kingsnake classifieds from time to time. You can also look at getting racks from freedom breeder or roylance rack systems. After that, build one. I recommend building one. It's cheaper and works just as well.

good luck

SAS supply. Their site is hosted by Kingsnake.com. I believe they are one of the sponsers of this forum. I use the lab style containers you refer to with great success.
