Litter training...

Prttyhtmchn Nov 29, 2003 10:30 AM

Has anybody here gone about litter training their tegu? I want to know if it's possible to just set up a litter box, & let them go in & out as they please. I have no idea how to go about it. If somebody has done this, & could tell me how they did it, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

As a follow up, I'll be trying to do this w/ an Argentine B&W baby boy.

I used to kind of do that with my B&Ws. As you know they like to go the bathroom in the water. I would bring them to the tub every day to go the bathroom. After awhile they would go before I would even turn the water on. I put some kitty litter in a tray in the tub and they would go in that. That was until I moved into a place that allowed pets so I could take them outside. I definitely preferred to take them outside instead since I didn't have to clean it up at all and I was a good way to get them exercise. Now that it's getting too cold outside I'm trying to hibernate them cuz of the clean up thing and they don't get nearly as much exercise.
Oh BTW they really get used to not going in their cage. When I went on my honey moon despite eating multiple mice daily they wouldn't go the bathroom for 5 days! (because we didn't want the baby sitter to take them out.)

Hi!

I managed to train amigo to go on a paper towel, and it was just a matter of being repetitive with it, just putting him on the paper towel over and over, and when he finally went, we would say "good boy meego" and he loved the praise....now (at 26 inches long) we can take him outside and just say "good boy" and he knows that it is ok to go. They are indeed awesome and extremely intelligent reptiles.

the same thing with mine. I put him a tank with some newspaper he knows he cant get out untill he goes. when he goes, i praise him and reward him by letting him walk about the upstairs of my house and do whatever he wants. (Its so great becasue hes not going on me or my carpet anymore. They are smart, arnt they.

Hi,

People think I am nuts, when I tell them that I managed to potty train my lizard!! lol I think that tegus in general are way more intelligent than most people think (that is, the people that actually know what a tegu is!!) Amigo now knows what the phrase "lunchtime" means too, and he knows "stop it!" when he is getting fiesty....always a handy one to teach them!
