quick genetics question

ReptiKH24 Nov 29, 2003 10:36 AM

male: tremper giant tangerine albino
female: normal tremper albino
the male is really nice, the female is just normal. what is the percentage of the offspring being being giant? 50-50? and will the coloration in the offspring fade because the male is being bred to a regular albino?

Assuming that your female is not heterozygous for this trait and that this is truly an inheritable trait (which I am lead to believe it is) and is not codominant, then all the offspring would be normal Tremper albinos but would carry the giant gene. If you bred daughter back to father you would, in theory, get half the clutch being giant. If you bred brother to sister you would, in theory, get a quarter of the offspring being giant, fifty percent heterozygous, and a quarter normal (though you could not distinguish the hets from the normals)

Feel free to email if I can help with anything else.

ok, this is clears up alot. so im guessing that if i breed the daughters to the dad, that the offspring will be 50% tangerine and/or giant. am i right?

You are correct on the giant end of things. As I already mentioned, this is thought to be an simple recessive trait (if I remember correctly!). Coloration on the otherhand is alot more involved. There are many genetic influences that come into play regarding the ammount of and depth of coloration (and that doesn't get into the temperature influences). I would guess that you are probably going to get some Tremper tangerine Giant albinos from a daughter/father cross - how many though I am not sure.
