live prey, and an unusually gentle killing technique

bengalensis Nov 29, 2003 12:30 PM

I fed my 6 foot burm a guinea(sp) pig last night and was surprised at her reaction/ method of killing/eating it. Normally she is lightning quick, grabbing her prey and wrapping it up in a sec or so. This time her method was COMPLETELY different. This is the first pig shes ever eaten, by the way. She slowly crawled up to it, barely even tongue flicking. She very gently let her body slide over it ever so softly. Continuing this very slow movement, she preceeded to wrap more of her coils around the pig, and very gradually began to constrict. The pig didnt budge nor try to squirm in the slightest. Gradually her "hug" on the pig increased, and the coils under its chin got very tight. Not once did this pig even make a peep. You could tell as it lost air, it began to twitch and kick, but by that time it was too late, and the pig was too constricted in my burms coils to move much at all. That was that. A peaceful end, and a nice big dinner for my burm.
Has anyone ever seen this before? I thought it was kinda of odd...

I havent seen this specifically, but I have seen some other odd feeding behavior. Ive seen my Burm swallow a live rodent without killing it.
