Second clutch??

centrewood Nov 29, 2003 03:39 PM

OK, OK, I know. It is late in the season but am wondering if my first year bred albino is carrying a second clutch. What are some time intervals between a first clutch and second clutch? She seems to be rather pudgy and one whooper of an appetite. With her hibernation just around the corner, could she be carrying? Her first clutch was laid in mid June.....

I know its possible to "hold sperm" but I don't think for more than a week or two. Is she housed with a male? If not and she hasn't been with one in more than a couple months, I'd say probably not. Maybe she's stuffing herself before the food is scarce? lol Others can help more i'm sure, but more info on when she was last able to mate would help us help you i'm sure

Thanks for the posts so far. She was bred once - late April. I keep all our snakes solitary and therfore, that was the only mating she had this year. Her first (ever) clutch was not without complications - she laid five in a four hour period (one went bad during icubation) but was egg bound w/one and two others behind trapped. After 60 hours, the egg was aspirated and passed within 40 hours with the other two passing easily, but in poor shape.

She has been fine all summer/fall but a bit slow in weigth gain after her egg bind ordeal. She is now back to her bred weight and like I said, eating like she is starved, even though her feedings are at 5/6 days and pudgy behind her gut. Again, I realize corns all have their own quirks, but what is some of the longer periods between 1st and 2nd clutches you have experienced??

Thanks again for any input.

Let her run through your hands and place your fingers on her underbelly with slight pressure. If there are eggs, you will feel them. A first year breeder may have a second clutch if she is in good condition and recovers quickly from her first clutch. A second breeding is not necessary because she may have retained sperm. Also, sperm retention is much longer than a couple of weeks. Check it out in the book "Keeping and Breeding Snakes". There are documented cases of a year and much longer.
If she does have eggs, obviously do not cool her.

One of my younger females produced a clutch of 10-12 eggs without breeding. I can send a pic of her coiled around them. Not viable/fertile but obviously she was ready even if I did not think she was. I can't wait to let her breed next year, she should easily double clutch.

I didn't know they could hold it that long, and never thought about the fact that they could be dud eggs.
