Hatchling growth rate

mike3 Nov 29, 2003 03:58 PM

I have been monitoring my hatchlings weight, length, and made comments about them weekly. My hatchlings are 16 weeks old and are 16-20 grams. I have been keeping them separated in 30 gallon tanks with bird seed bedding. Why are yours growing so fast. Is that normal and is that healthy. I just put all of my hatchlings with the aduls in a huge 6 X 8 X 2.5 tank filled with about 6-10 inches of dirt. They already are eating and are basking more and are more active. Were you hatchlings agressive towards eachother. What are you feeding them. Are you giving them anything special. I am giving them mustard, collard, turnip, and radiccio dailly and for 2 months i added hibiscus flowers and leaves to this mix. Why aren't mine growing fast? The only reason why i think they aren't growing fast is because i had them on bird seeds, now they are on dirt so hopefully they will catch up.

Have you fed them any waxworms? I heard that they are very good for baby uros and it makes them grow bigger faster.

Good luck with your little ones

I did for the first 2 months but i stopped after that because even though i only fed a couple to each lizard every week they stopped eating thier veggies and wanted the wax worms. Now that i think about it, isn't it unhealthy for them to grow unaturally fast. I looked at a website and it seems my uros are growing the same/a little faster than wild uros. Is that good or bad. I recently started adding a calcium spray to the their food so lets see if that gives them a boost, also in the wild they are brumating during this period does anyone even attempt to brumate their uros. I hear people say my uro is a juvenile, it is too young to brumate. Well in the wild wouldn't the 4 month old hatchlings start brumating right now. Should we brumate all ages of uros or just keep them active during the winter months?
