RINGNECK NOT EATING......

HerpHelmz Nov 29, 2003 04:16 PM

Hello,
My female Ringneck Snake out of a 2003 clutch of eggs from September has stopped eating, I have no clue why. She usually ate atleast 3 worms a week. I don't know if I should get worried or not, it's just been 4 days but still, it's unusual. Unfortunately, her sibling, died on the 24th due to some internal problems, is that why it won't eat? Is it mourning? Or should I go about and hibernate it. Get back to me.

Mine go off food for a few weeks maybe a month or so every year.I live in long island NY dont use any supplemental heat for them other than a dual flourescent light strip for the plants.
Their tank is by the radiator the rear glass stays at around 75 in winter.I never actually hibernate in the true sense but if they dont eat I just dont offer food for aweek or so.
I think the northern types which mine are might not eat during the winter for awhile mine do that every yr around DEC/JAN.

Trust me, I need to use heat for her tank. I have a heat pad under 1/4 of the tank as the warm side(about 75)the heat pad is always on medium power. On the other 3/4 of the tank is good soil(the snake knows to go here for food). I still haven't figure out why she isn't eating and I only have like 6 worms left. The little gupy trick didn't work with mine. Does anybody know of any other things I could try to feed her? It's too cold for me to catch a little snake she could eat.

It is normal. Snakes brumate during the winter. Even though the temps are up, they can sense it is winter. Therefore, they will probably stop eating randomly for a while and then just start back up again a few wks/months later for no apparent reason. The only trick I can think of is to cool it for a bit or just wait it out. Be patient. Andy
