Receiving a reptile with hypothermia, What it doe's to them and a treatment for it

TLB Nov 29, 2003 06:10 PM

Hi

I had read below how "Jag" had received a gecko through U.P.S. and was very cold and had needed to know how to treat it.

I had once ordered two reptiles from a breeder far away in the winter time and she had shipped them out on a Tuesday using Airborne and some how they had gotten miss placed and the breeder and I were working frantically trying to get answers.

A little later that day the breeder e-mailed me and she had said that they found them and they would shipped out that evening and gave me a tracking number. Then another miss hap, they missed getting on the plain, then they got on the first plan the next morning and got stuck at a hub in Minnesota and by this time the breeder and I were extremely freaking out, because the heat packs wouldn't be effective anymore. The breeder was dealing with Airborne and in the meantime I knew they would be coming in, in really bad condition, but I would never once let myself think they would be dead, so I went out on the net to see if I could find something to help treat them when I got them.

I finally received the geckos on Friday morning and I ripped open the box as quick as I could to find two geckos that were ice cold and not moving, but still breathing, so I quickly started this hypothermia protacal that I found on the internet by: Melissa Kaplin (http://www.anapsid.org/iguana/hypothermia.html) and I saved there lives, and they are happy and healthy and I still have them both.

Take Care, TLB

I know you didn't write it or anything, lol, but you provided us all with useful information for something that could happen to ALL of us. Thank you, and I hope I NEVER have to use that information, lol.
