TWO LITTLE JUNGLE DOODS....>

LindaH Nov 29, 2003 07:08 PM

I bought these two males from Mike Weitzman and Jeremy Stone's recent litter. I chose them from pics and didn't realize just HOW different they are until I saw them in "snake". I think the two looks are so cool. The aberrant one is has a lot of pinks, mauves, & peach coming through on it's sides. He's usually a little lighter, but posing for pictures is pretty scarey stuff!! The other one has a lot of yellows and I love the contrast!

And i mean no offense by asking because they are very beautiful.Where does the name jungle boa derive from?To me IMO they look like regular everyday boas with just a tidbit of different color and patterning.Other than the color, what exactly is genetic thats supposed to make them look junglish? They really are gorgeous boas but i dont see the whole junglish look (not only in them but in most "jungle" boas).Jungle to me would be something extreme as in extreme pattern, color, genetic traits, etc. Stripes, pastel colors, etc to me doesnt make it(or any ofthem a jungle). Now if it had some funky patterning like the spider ball,or even the reduced pattern ball, then add the color scheme of pastel then yeah i could see the jungle look. Please explain the concept (if anyone can).Again they are very beautiful but i'm just curious.I know they say curiosity killed the cat,but then again i dont purr.Regards Bill McLeod

I too have been curious about the criterium for picking jungle boas out of a litter. Of course, like anything else, the extreme versions are spectacular animals and very easy to recognize, but on the borderline animals with maybe a very small abberancy on one saddle can be confusing. I guess all relatively "new" morphs will initally cause confusion...I remember a few years back when "pastel dreams" caused alot of questions like, "is my boa a pastel dream?"

BTW, both boas look awesome...just looking for an education.

with Mike Weitzman and from the information I gathered, there are three main traits associated with Jungle Boas. One of course is the abberant patterning although not all Jungle Boas have extreme aberrant patterns. These can be anything from fatter "cookie cutter" shape saddles to the extreme striping or linking formed by connecting saddles. Two, I believe is elongated tail saddles or striping on the tail (both of Linda's males have this) with high contrast between the background body color and the tail saddle. You should be able to see how crisp the difference is between the body and the tail saddles. And I believe the third characteristic of a Jungle Boa is a more yellowish overall body color.

Please correct me if I am wrong about any of these Mike or anyone else.

I also picked up one of the babies from Mike and Jeremy's breeding but he's still at Jeremy's. As soon as I get him, I'll take some pictures to try to capture these characteristics. Mike showed me some photos of the litter and you can really, REALLY tell which babies are the Jungles and which babies are the normals when you look at them compared to each other. I can't wait to take some photos of my Jungle next to a normal. I think it may be difficult to tell the difference between a Jungle and normal when all you see is the Jungle by itself. Comparison shots are always great...so we'll see...

Hi Bill,

Jeremy Stone or Mike Weitzman (Basically Boas) can explain it MUCH better than I.....but in a nutshell...."Jungle" refers to both color and pattern. It is a dominant gene. The babies in the litter that are Jungle will have varying degrees of aberrancy, but even those that do not express it themselves can produce it. I love aberrant patterns, and I like this morph. For me, it will be interesting to see how these will integrate with some of the color morphs out there. For instance, I want to put one of these little guys with one of my Ghost females that has an aberrant type pattern. I also purchased one of Tim Magee's beautiful Hypo Harlequin females with the intent of seeing what that combination will yield....since they both produce aberrant patterns.

But still i dont see the whole jungle difference as far as patterning and color.Maybe its just me,i sorta like the normals better i guess, kinda like the b/ps,normal is better to me.I would like to see what kinda colors you could get from breeding them to like a pastel or albino, now that would be cool.Maybe breed them to an anery, harlequin,or even ghost(like yours) to see what happens.Maybe just maybe i would actually buy at least one boa morph.Anyway still gorgeous boas.
