Ok, if not Timothy hay, what do you recomend or what have you used for your hatchlings?
I have used coconut fiber with good re-sults. It's sold at
ALL the major pet store out-lets. It comes in brick form. Cut
off half the brick. Put it in a bucket. Add hot water. The fiber
will expand. If half a brick isn't enough for your enclosure,
moisten some more!!
Hi,
I use Timothy hay (the same, from Wal-mart) piled up on one side on top of coconut fiber dirt mixed with washed fine playsand (which covers the whole floor). Timothy hay is good for torts (as compared to other hays like alfalfa) since it doesn't have a lot of protein in it, so it is safe for the torts to eat. And I know my tort loves to bury himself in the hay

well... call me a paranoid mama (of a 2-month-old redfoot), but i'd not use it simply because it's kind of... pointy, i suppose, and hard. it makes me cringe to think that a teeny hatchling could poke himself in the eye or something with it. >_<
personally i like bed-a-beast, which is at places like petsmart. it's made from coconut husk and is much softer and in smaller bits, and it's harmless if ingested.
just my two cents...
Timothy hay is fine.
