Popularity of Uros and Rhacs

triturus Nov 30, 2003 06:18 AM

I recently got into geckos after having a Uroplatus unexpectedly added to my collection of newts. I've been doing more research on these lizards and other geckos in general, and I have found that both leaf-tailed geckos and crested geckos seem to have grown very popular over the last few years. Is it because they don't need a lot of heat, or are they just the "big new thing" in gecko land?

Cresteds are easy to care for and dont need much heavy equipment. They are also fairly cheap and a breakaway from leopards. The bad news is, petco just made a deal with sandfire ranch so now they are selling those things for like 35 a piece and we smaller stores cant compete....I sense much improper care ahead : Be prepared for a lot of "I got it at petco and they said ______". As for the Uros, most are starting to realise that they are actually pretty mellow and nice to handle. Although they need a big tank, they make great pets....just dont do much in the tank.

Hey another reason why people like crested is because they look cool, and they were once thought extinct. Also I work at Petco and we are selling them for like 70-. And I atleast try to keep the people wanting to buy the crested looking for information for themselves in books and places like this. But unforchinatly some people just have to have them without care to learn about them, and I can only refuse sale if I know that the buyer will abuse them.

Yeah I know what you mean, refuse of sale rarely works for several reasons. 1. A person might buy everything and just ignore it. 2. A person can just come back later and lie. 3. Often times, you try to get the animal out of the petshop to begin with since they are not going to get proper care there. Pet shops cant provide perfect care but only temporary enclosures, it is important that the person understands this. Not much we can do about this....not really the shops fault in most cases.

when did this deal with petco happen?
when will they start selling?

and don't worry, i don't really trust what pet store employees say.. hehe~ i've been doing research on husbandry for these cresties since september and plan to continue research before summer.

i was going to order from LLLReptile to take care of a crested who's tail fell off... but for the same price at petco with a tail?
