Calci-Sand.

daduru Nov 30, 2003 08:06 AM

Does anyone use this product for their garters? The only problem I forsee using this is when feeding fish, the particles would stick all over the fish. Im currently using the green turf, but lately i can tell it is producing a strong odor, and cleanup would be alot easier if i could just scoop out their [bleep] instead of having to rinse the turf. It would also appear much more realistic looking.

why dont you just feed fish in your water bowl?

I have used it before. It also has a strong odor and the finer sand is really dusty. Not sure about the bigger grains if there are bigger.

Also, I was using it for my boa. Don't use it anymore for previously stated reasons.

Calci-sand is pure calcium and will not hurt your snake if ingested. I use it in all of my tarantula cages and in a few of my copperhead cages. A friend of mine uses calci-sand in most of his snake cages at his pet store. red sand looks kinda neat with a baby ball python. Hope this helps.

Calci-sand does look good, but with FES (fish eating snakes) you are going to be using a lot of it to reduce odors. FES are messy (as you know), you can't just clean calci-sand. It's expenseive. I would stick with the turf, but consider it disposable. Go to your local Home store and buy a roll of it and cut it into pieces that fit your tank. After a few rinses, throw each piece away and use a new one. This will save you money, and it looks OK. Use the money you saved to buy some real plants (Pothos, sanservieria etc...)and moss to make up for the lack of "naturalistic-ness" that comes with the turf. When have you seen Garter snakes playing at the beach anyway?
