New To Corn Snakes

Frostbyte Nov 30, 2003 09:19 AM

I bought what was sold to me as a typical phase corn snake. Its about "14 long. Ok this is what gets me .. they guy that sold it to me breeds them . All of his snakes looked healthy and "clean ". No problems , later I was reading that these guys need a heat source , well I was told that they snake would be ok as long as they day temps in my house were 70 ish and it didnt go under 65 at night ? I keep the snake in my Tarantula room where I keep a space heater heating the room to 75-80 during the day , but from time to time it does drop to say 68 at night. Also Im keeping this guy on aspen chips as bedding . Weird thing was when I went and did some checking on better snakes as 1st pets some people told me ball pythons were better than corns ? I chose the corn over the ball for the simple fact that I heard heating temps for a ball were alot stricter ? Thanks for any help ....

You chose right. Ball Pythons are commonly sold by petshops as "beginner snakes". They are anything but. Captive born may eat readily enough, but the imported (and there still is A LOT out there) can be one pain to get to get started. For that and other reasons, I don't recomend them to beginners. The (American Red, Emories and various Black/yellow rat species) Ratsnakes, common Bullsnake and Chain king ssp. are much better snakes for beginners.
