Lost teeth

aplaxco Nov 30, 2003 01:13 PM

Could someone please let me know what I should watch for after a snake (BCI) has struck and lost a tooth? I know that it can lead to infection, but I wasn't sure how I should be treating it.

Thanks!
Anna

Snakes loose and replace their teeth all the time. Oftentimes, when they come loose, the teeth are swallowed and pass undigested through the gut. You could confirm this by teasing apart each bolus of feces your snake deposits and finding the tiny white teeth. Start a collection of snake teeth!

So, unless you have reason to believe some damage has been done, do nothing.

Okay, I thought I had read somewhere it could be a problem, but I also knew they lost teeth all the time. I was also thinking in the wild it could be a huge problem if they got an infection every time they bit a predator. Worry beat out common sense that time. I won't stress on it unless I notice a problem.

I think if the tooth actually snaps off there would be more of a risk, but that doesn't happen too often. Just watch for any swelling or discharge, but odds are good that the snake will be fine.
