How do you know when silkworms are ready to make coccoons?

How do i know when my silkies are ready? When should i put cardboard tubes in with them?

When they are about the size of your index finger...I put them in with cardboard tubes once they were too big to feed to my cham. He didn't like them that big anyway...just keep feeding them, and when they are ready, they will spin. I got all of the ones I put in there to spin, but not all of those actually emerged.

SOME i think are almost 3" Some are awhile off yet. I have a bunch of 1" cardboard tubes-- should i just put them on top of them? Will they find them if i put them off to the side?

I guess i underestimate my silkworms. I never thought theyd be able to find the cubby hole. They seem blind and just sit and wait for food to come to them all the time.

Joe, I read somewhere that silkies raised on leaves spin better (and whiter) cocoons than ones raised on chow. Have you found any difference? I like the picture!
