Sick Iguana

coopa37 Nov 30, 2003 03:14 PM

Yesterday I bought an iguana from some people who hadn't taken very good care of it. I bought it so I could help it out and I don't know too much about Iguanas. He is about 3 feet long and I think he has mouth rot. Infact his left eye and the left side of his mouth look pretty bad. He doesn't seem to be able to close the left side of his mouth all the way and I scooped some yellow-greenish sticky goo out of his mouth. He does eat with a little assistance and he also moves around a bit. The closest herp vet I know of is about 2 1/2 hours from where I live so any advise would be a HUGE help.

No one here is a vet, and cannot give the advice you need.

Going to a qualified herp vet is your only option, or the animal will die a slow, painful death.

You took on the responsibility of the iguana, now you need to take care of the situation. S/He needs a vet very much by the sounds of things!

Good luck, and let us know how things turn out.

Iguanas die very slowly. I'm sorry to say that your ig right now is in the process of dying. From your description, there are no home remedies to reverse that condition. He has problems that can only be helped by a vet.

That trip to the vet can eventually result in a healthy, well-mannered rescued ig.

In the meantime, keep him at the recommended temperatures and feed the recommended foods:

It's going to be tough being new to iguana care while you are managing a sick iguana. Please stay in touch.

Thank you for your input. I was hoping I guess for some kind of easy home remedy or someone who had experienced something similar before. I did make an appointment for the closest reputable herp vet (which is about 2 1/2 hours away) for wednesday so hopefully everything will work out and eventually turn for the best. I'll keep you posted on his recovery, and if I ever get a digital camera, I'll post some pics.

Thanks again,
Sam Cooper
