Stuck shed...need help

LeeFobes Jun 01, 2003 09:05 PM

My BP has had a bad head shed this shedding. his head and part of his neck still have dead skin on it while the rest of his body has been shed normal for like 2 weeks. any idea how to get them off? i tried soaking for 30 mins but he kept squirming and was stationary for about 5 mins i dont think it helped any. hes about 2 1/2 feet long but still a noticable "yearling". im not sure if he still has caps or not, his eyes look dry and hav a couple wrinkles ib them. i have a screentop, would it help if i replace the screen part with plexi glass? does he need a black light (i got one on 24/7) he eats every 3 days and is not aggressive.

When one of my snakes has a stuck shed, I get a towel damp with warm water and put it in the bottom of a rubbermaid-type container. You can put the snake in the container and the damp towel plus the humidity it creates will help soften the skin without the snake freaking out in water.

PS - maybe it's just me, but feeding every 3 days sounds like an awful lot, even for a young snake.

hmmm...usually a good soak, helps my babies shed nicely. A screen top can be a problem though, especially with humidity. When the humidity gets too low (evident in the 'eye cracks') I often place a sheet of celaphane or damp towel over 3/4 of the top to hold the humidity better. Just something to try.

Depending on what you are feeding (size) you may consider going up a size and feeding young every 4-5 days and adults weekly. Since I am trying to get the weight up on my females, I feed a couple of times a week if they are interested. I've only got one female that is 'off-feed' (recent addition that was abused previously) but they don't hesitate and its only a second or so before they strike. If you are trying to slow their growth, make sure you are feeding the right size prey and space the feedings accordingly.

Thanks, i will try the damp towel over the screen (seems logical) I feed him every three days well, becuase he eats every three days. When i first got him, i offered a mouse everyday for 2 weeks, the first week he ate 2 small ones at the same time, then, the next day i offered an adult, he didnt eat it. Then after 1 more day of non eating, i tried to give him another adult mouse, he ate it. he kept eating every three days that ive had him.
