Calculating Gal, and custom features on tanks question

shopaholic Jun 01, 2003 09:08 PM

Scientifically minded people-if you have a tube that is 27 in long by 9 in in diameter, how many gal is that? I have a glass tube that was made by Smith and Hawkin for putting over plants to increase humidity. This shape is extremely appealing to me and wondered how to calculate the size to see if some modification to it would render it to be a big enough/nice enough home for my Imitators. If its too small or too unstable or something, I will have a Hex made to these dimentions: 30 in high x 16 in diameter. What would the gal be on that? And if you were to have it custom made, would you put a front or side door on it and what would you specify?

I just had this same question about a week ago cuz I plan on custom building a tank. A 180 gallon tank is 6x2x2 = 24 Cubic Feet. 180 / 24 = 7.5

I want a 6x3x2, so a 36 x 7.5 = 240 gallon tank

For your dream setup, just figure out the feet in Diameter, Heighth, and Length and do the math. Hope this helped.

I just sat back and thought about this math.. does it really work out right? Seems like if you add 1 foot to the heigth of the tank it would add more than adding a foot to the length. Anyone tested this out yet? Assuming that I was wrong in my math, is there a way to figure it out?

Spar,

Your way sounds confusing...the way I was told to do it is just multiply all dimensions and then divide by 231....so the new tanks I am getting are 11" by 14" by 20" high for thumbnail frogs and that equals 3080 and I divide that by 231 to get 13.3...so the tanks are 13.3 gallons each.

1 gallon = 231 cubic inches

So If I were to order a Hex; 30Hx16Dx16W would that be-
16X16X30= 7680 Divided by 231= 33.25Gal ( I know its probably a little off because it is a HEX) But is that the idea?

And do you guys think these dimentions would make the tank very unstable? Its very tall and slender. Thanks
