New Licorice Black Rat (pic)

Kevin Saunders Nov 30, 2003 06:09 PM

I just got a baby male black rat at the Colombus, Ohio show. I love this little guy! He's already totally tame, ate a pinky as soon as he was in his new setup, and went out exploring his new place his first night home. I got him from Ashley Joliff and probably wouldn't have even noticed that they had whitesideds except they advertise on KS classifieds and I recognized a picture he had at his table. I am definately pleased with my purchase and they were even kind enough to knock $5 off so I could eat on the way home (I'll learn to bring enough money someday). Anyway, let me know what you think.

I just picked up a trio of black rat morphs in July from Scott Wright and they're excellent. I have a whiteside male het albino, female albino het whiteside, and a female albino whiteside. Those albino whitesides are awesome, the pattern on they're back is like a checkerboard. They cost a pretty penny but if you enjoy the whitesides, they're a great morph. Nothing quite like a good looking black rat morph. You got a nice looking one there.

I prefer the regular whitesideds since they have more contrast-just my humble opinion. Mine is 66% possible double het though. If I ever breed him, I might end up with some albino whitesideds. The others had more of a blotched/checkery pattern, but he pulled this one out from under the table when I told him I liked the thicker, darker back stripes best. He said he liked this one best and that it wouldn't show as much patterning as an adult. I saw an adult for sale in the classifieds a while back that had no blotching at all with very dark tipping all down the back and I just thought it was so beautiful that I've always wanted one just like it. I can't wait for the color change to start, but they are pretty unique looking even as babies. Thanks for the compliments and good luck with yours.

Good luck w/ him....

Sure thing. I'll keep taking pics as the color change progresses. I really couldn't be any happier with the little guy-perfect temperament and ate right away. If I can make space down the line, I'll definately get a female to breed with him.

How close are you to a rusty licorice? or a hypo lavender licorice
thanks Andre'

I don't believe I'm going to have anything (animals or time) invested in the Brindle Lic. Sticks as I'm not really interested. I don't really know if there will be much of a difference in the end result. I'm not sure of what a Hypo Lavendar is?? Got any pix?? Is it the same as a Rusty?? I am working on that one. Got another year - maybe two on that one. I am most excited about my Brindle Motely combo. I accidentally produced Motleys two years in a row from breeding Dbl. Het. Alb. Lic. Sticks together. The female (runt) from this year, was more of a Zig-Zag but had the Motley pattern on the last half of her body. I wish I would have gotten some pix of the male as a neonate - he doesn't look as impressive now. That is why I bred him to the Brindle - should retain most of the pattern as an adult. I also have a fairly new strain of Albino (Sunglow) that I plan on breeding into the Lic. Sticks & Motley. I'll keep you updated....

I let my ks account expired but i can e-mail you the pic of my hypo or lavender amel blk rat.I need your e-mail...do you have any pic of your motleys and your new strain sunglow.
thanks Dre'

Comparison pix of the Albinos as neonates. They have grown quite a bit since this pic. & have really started to show the difference. I'll try to get some new pix soon. I imagine that the T Albino is what you call a Lavendar Albino. The Sunglow will practically become a patternless dark red snake.

This animal is a very unusual Brindle male that I picked up. It seems to be lacking almost all of the dark pigment associated w/ the Brindle mutation.
