Fat Tail

skits Nov 30, 2003 06:14 PM

Sorry to bother you all again, i don't know if african fat tails are welcome in this forum but i picked the closest forum. Can anyone tell me about this little guy i purchased. Does he look healthy? I havn't been able to get him/ or her to eat since i bought it two days ago. It takes no interest in crickets, am I feeding it at the wrong time of day, should i wait til night since their nocturnal?

It did create a stool a day ago, it smelled a little, but it was on paper towels, and you could only smell it when you opened up the tank (10Gal, over the top). I really appreciate all the help i can get, I purchased the guy from petsmart, not to sure of their quality with reptiles, but i hope its alright. Its a present for my gf, her first reptile. Thanks again for the help.

oh and here's a vent pic, i think its a she, but can't be to sure, no clue how old it is... Lady at petsmart knew nothing about reptiles. When she took the little guy out, she went to get thick gloves like you would use to handle a strange dog, lol. Well anyways thanks again for the help.

Lol, dont underestimate pet store fat tails that havent been handled much. Any other fat tail i have ever seen or held has been a total sweetheart, like they're supposed to be, except for this one fattail that we had when i first started my job at Petsmart a while ago. I didnt know much about reptiles then, but I was cleaning them all one day and we had a HUGE african fat tail. everyone warned me not to pick it up because it was mean, so i scooped him up gently in a net to take him out to clean him. He was very calm and just sat nicely and let me do my thing.

When it came time to put him back in the clean cage, i figured since he was so good when i scooped him, that he would be fine if i just picked him up and put him back. so i gently picked him up, he was fine and everything. I placed him back in his cage and he was fine and sweet. He crawled off my hand slowly and i thought all was fine, but once he got off my hand, he turned around, gave me a NASTY bite, and went under his hide! it hurt like heck and i was bleeding everywhere! he took a nice chunk off my finger, lol. He did the same to the woman I sold him to, too. She had a lot of reptiles, including fat tails already, and this one was very big and had real nice coloring, so she bought him. I warned her it was mean, but of course she didnt believe me, haha.

Well thats my story. Very nice gecko you have, and she looks very healthy! If her poop still smells real bad and your worried, it wouldnt be a bad idea to get a fecal sample checked at the vets, just in case.

Nice fat tail. Most petshops dont take great care of there animals, but she doesnt show any visible signs of sickness. Its normal for leos to not eat a for a couple days after you get them, I assume its the same with fat tails. Good luck with her it looks like a female to me if its like in leos. Later

P.S. You should check out the gecko forum there might be more responses there or more people that own fat tails...

I would say it looks like a female judging by lack of pre anal pores, however there looks to be a division in the hemipenal buldge (Can't tell if it's just a shadow).
I bought a male from a pet store that was pretty big (58 grams when we bought him). He honestly went for 5 months before he ate a thing, and then all of a sudden I couldn't feed him enough. As of writing he is over 90 grams and HUGE. You just have to make sure they have a couple of hides, and a moist hide box. Other than that, she looks really good, tail has great weight!
