Pls help! - lizard could be egg bound !

Lilia Nov 30, 2003 07:00 PM

My lizard laid two eggs yesterday (24 hours ago). She hasn't laid any more since. In the past she has laid in batches of 7 eggs; never this few. I am afraid she could be egg bound.

Could anyone please tell me what signs to look for? How can I tell if she still has eggs inside her?

How long before calcification of a stuck egg occurs?

Thanks!

As far as bumps inside her goes, I suppose I can feel a couple of them but I am not sure if they are eggs or organs. I don't know what I should be looking for.

I don't particularly notice any signs of her being sick (she ate two crickets and has been drinking pedialyte). She was a bit slower (stays inside her cave longer) than usual today, but she will usually do that after laying eggs anyway.

Is laying such a small quantity of eggs normal? Even after having laid multiple times before in larger batches?

I am considering taking her to the vet tomorrow... X-rays should be able to confirm for me. I just hope it isn't too late. I would be devastated...

And I have been reading HD's postings on her girl's operation. Thanks for referring me to that. But I still can't find details as to how long an egg takes to calcify, or how to look for eggs inside (where are they located usually), or if laying only two eggs is abnormal... etc. (plus the new search engine is terrible!)

I guess I'll just keep posting on here and looking out for more answers.

Thanks much! - Lilia.

...some egg-laying problems this year. One (Haggis) refused to lay, retained gravid coloration for over a month past her "due" date and then passed 6 deflated, but partially calcified eggs. Two others (Brutus and Hulk) became obviously gravid with large clutches, refused to lay also, and totally resorbed the ova without any signs of distress, other than a brief reduction in appetite (my take is they were obtaining some nourishment from the assimilation). These were all first clutches of probably infertile eggs, so YMMV. If your lizard does show any signs of depression, a vet trip is indicated, but I posted this to share my experience that a retained egg is not necessarily the end of the world, in some cases.

this year retain her eggs a very long time, over 2 1/2 months, she then layed them, they were infertile.
They did not calcify. They were actually spongey !

I'm referring to my C. vestiguim, Baja collared female, who usually only lays 3 - 4 eggs anyway, as opposed to my C. collaris female, who layed 7 eggs each time.

I'd say the fact shes eating and looking okay is a good sign.
Keep us posted on her, we really do care. Eve
