my crested geckos won't eat

Celcis Nov 30, 2003 10:12 PM

I just bought 2 crested geckos juv. and i dont think they are eating. I have had them for a few days and i have given them mealworm, crickets and apricot baby-food, but i haven't seen them eat any of it. I have been keeping count of all the crickets i put in the cage at night and taken out the same amount in the moring. should i be very worried. Also I am having problems regulating the temp, I have a UTH and the temp. stays at like 65 so i used a light to give me more heat so i can get it at to 80 but then it overheats so i turn the light off and it goes back down. any help or ideas would help.
Thanks John

it depends on how big the cage is, usually a 100 watt bulb has no prob getting my E.Collard cage up to 90, and a tight spot can get spots up to 100 degrees depending on the light and how close it is to the cage.
Crested's though, during the day hide in tubes at the top, and i have a cage 24 inches tall by 18 wide and long. I would use 60 watt or less, and depending on the temp inside during the day and night decide to leave the light on always or sometimes, make sure the light is infared though, as they can't see this and it won't disturb them, so i'm told. Sorry couldn't help on the eating prob, they won't starve themselves, try skipping a day or two and offer it again, they should take it. Also check out the Rhac forum, they'll help you out.

oh and remember, Cresteds can handle temps into the 50's from what i've read, but don't go over 85F it'll stress them.

Hey,
What I do for baby cresties is to put babyfood on my finger, them pick up the baby and very carefully put a bit on its nose it will lick it off (I keep my finger with the food with in reach of its tongue) then start licking my finger where the baby food is. Also if you just got it give it a bit of time to adjust before feeding.

Hey,

You should get rid of the UTH as cresteds are arboreal, and wouldbe useless. They only heat the ground, not air.
