bigdee Nov 30, 2003 11:54 PM

their is a het for albino female 5' for $1000 and it was for $1600. Now I bought a female about 3' for $300. Is it me or is this price totally outragouse being that you can get a albino for around $1000. I told him that was way too much for a het and he said that is the going price on a 5'. Its on the classified under 2001 het for albino female.

ive seen them go for anywhere between $1500-2000for a good sized het female and thats more the far figuring a small girl you can get 15-20 out of, thats 5-10 albinos depending on whats its breed to (het or albino) so your looking at an easy 7k return

Since I rarely acquire animals for resale I have always considered that if I found a boa for sale that I liked and wanted, and I could afford it, I would purchase it. I'm not above asking for a discount or some other consideration but it never occured to me to compare the price of a boa that I want with one that I'm not buying, what is the importance of the value of an animal I don't want? Using that logic, you would have to ask the seller of the boa you are buying to raise his price, if other similar boas were priced higher!

I'm having a little trouble understanding the price comparison shopping angle, at least in the context of buying a pet! .. maybe we should have a little forum survey.

Post this list, or part of it if some are unimpportant to you, in order of importance to you when making a purchase of a boa or other pet. If you can think of another consideration, plug that in too.

Here they are, in no particular order:

PRICE
FORM OF PAYMENT
HEALTH OF ANIMAL
APPEARANCE OF ANIMAL
EASE OF TRANSACTION
POTENTIAL FOR PROFIT
ATTITUDE (incl openness) OF SELLER
HISTORY OF THE ANIMAL

I was going to include temperament, but what can we really know of the temperament of a boa after we get it home by holding it for a few minutes before buying? That seems too subjective.. anyway you might think that is important.

I'll post mine later so I won't be seen as stuffing the ballot box or trying to influence the survey.

1. Health
2. Appearance
3. History
...If 1,2 or 3 don't make the cut this will usually kill the deal
4. Seller's attitude, and knowledge of animal
5. Price
6. Potential for profit
7. Ease of transaction...this is when the BOI comes in handy.

Great idea for a survey Gus.
In regards to the question posed by this thread starter...the price put on an animal is the value the seller has given that particular animal, and this can vary greatly within any given market. If you really wanted that animal, price would be a secondary concern. And remember you can always negotiate!

1.) Health of animal

2.) History of the animal

3.) Appearance of animal (this depends on the history of the animal because sometimes other siblings look better than the snake your about to buy. This can give you an idea on on how the babies can look if you decide to bred it.)

4.) Attitude of the seller

5.) Price

6.) ease of transaciton

7.) form of payment

8.)potential for profit ( making money is cool but if I could afford to keep them all I would)

RioBravoReptiles Dec 01, 2003 02:35 PM

1) HEALTH OF ANIMAL

2) HISTORY OF THE ANIMAL

3) APPEARANCE OF ANIMAL

4) ATTITUDE (and knowledge! thanks!) OF SELLER

Everything else is BS....

IMHO

Listed from most important to least important of those things I think of when buying a snake:

HEALTH OF ANIMAL
CB vs WC
EASE OF TRANSACTION (which I think includes the attitude of the seller)
APPEARANCE OF ANIMAL
PRICE
POTENTIAL FOR PROFIT

Health will always, forever and ever, be the deciding factor of whether I will or won't buy a snake. I recently was looking at a snake and it was a beautiful snake, priced right for the morph, but it was older than I would normally accept and it has just produced slugs and only slugs.

I don't think I would ever buy a wild caught animal, but I guess if it was healthy and it would make a good addition to my collection I would consider it.

"Ease of transaction" and "Appearance of animal" could be swapped, depending on why I'm buying the animal, for beauty or for genetics. I will put up with tons of crap in the transation if I end up with a beautiful snake in the end, but when I'm buying for solely the genetics that a certain snake has (e.g. het for something) I really don't care how butt ugly it is as long as I know I won't have a hassle with the transaction.

Price is obviously important and initially that's the main thing I think of, but it eventually gets pushed down to this importance because the other things are more important in the long run of the transaction.

Profit if also always on my mind when I make a buy, but it never gets very high on my priorities. After all we are in this hobby for the fun of it not the money, right?

I may change my view on the importance of these things for future transations, but this is what I think right now.

1. APPEARANCE OF ANIMAL - This is the first thing that catches my eye in an ad, obviously if I am not enticed by it, I won't pursue it.

2. HEALTH OF ANIMAL - of course if the animal is not 100% healthy, the transaction stops.

3. ATTITUDE (incl openness) OF SELLER - But my main interest here is if I trust the seller, if not, I skip the sale. Referals are very important.

4. Suprise "PRICE" - maybe I am missing the point here, but for me, if I can't afford it, I move on to the next sale, so price is very important to me.

5. The other stuff, I don't worring about. For example, if I trust the person, I don't mind a difficult transaction. Also, if I don't like the animal, it does not matter how profitable it is because I will lose interest in keeping it.

Options given;
PRICE
FORM OF PAYMENT
HEALTH OF ANIMAL
APPEARANCE OF ANIMAL
EASE OF TRANSACTION
POTENTIAL FOR PROFIT
ATTITUDE (incl openness) OF SELLER
HISTORY OF THE ANIMAL
My personal order;
1-Appearance, has to catch my eye first off!
2-Price-after I decide I like it, I have to be able to afford it
3-Health/history-usually go hand in hand-if not healthy 1 and 2 no longer matter.
4-Attitude-Lots of nice people to give money too, why pay a pr$%k
5-Ease-sort of goes with number 4
6-Potential for profit-Nothing wrong with making money!
7-Form of payment-cash/m.o./cashiers check/credit card-either or!
8-Eight options, I put health/history as one...see no. 3

Well, with the options presented(I know you said we could add some Gus, but I just got home from work-too tired, so I took the lazy way out-LOL) I would say this is the order in which I make purchases. Hope I pass-lol, take care!

Paul
