feeding my macro reptomin...

judo153 Dec 01, 2003 12:23 AM

i'm new to this forum so, hello people who frequent this forum,
i own a 2-3 inch ally snap who only eats moving stuff so that means he doesn't eat the reptomin i try to feed him(or any of the fish that die,for that matter).the thing is i have alot of reptomin stocked up too,and i don't want it to go to waste.also he has the hardest time catching fish so normally i have to buy like 30-40 rosy golds,iv'e tried to put him in a smaller tank for feeding purposes, but all he does is try to get out,ive let him settle in it but he still won't eat unless he's in his regular size aquarium(30 gal)so if anybody has any tips on getting him to eat reptomin or a solution to him being a bad fisher please give me some input thanks...

My two commons had the same problem when they were 2 inches. What I used to do was toss some Reptomin, beef heart, crickets and rosies in their tank and let them choose what to eat. Since I had two good Fluval filters in there I didnt need to worry about the repto dissolving. I would scoop out the rest of whatever they didnt eat.
They never would eat the repto. They would try it and spit it out. Then one day a cricket used the repto as a life raft and Abrahms took a bite and liked it. And soon after Sherman just tried them repeatedly and eventually liked them. Now they love it.
Now I feed them rosies, repto, beef heart, chicken liver, and ghost shrimp. I've had a problem with feeding them fruit and veggies tho...

Manson and Hannibal, my two 2 inch common hatchlings, absolutely LOVE betta (fish) pellets. They get a varied diet that includes reptomin (which they hate), and lots of live/used to be live stuff. Betta food has everything that reptomin has and in addition, it has higher protein and fat ratios. Hope this helped some.

BTW.......They are getting a 55 gallon aquarium for christmas!!! Santa sure loves snappers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

santa does love snappers!
i've gotten my snappers (fla./common)to eat reptomin by mixing it with tetra's jumbo min.its about twice the size but even my smallest hatchlings have no problems once it has
soaked & softened up for a few minutes.
a note on rosies.if they die on you-mine always did within 1-2 days-try regular fat head minnows from a bait store.they will last until eaten in a clean turtle tank.

thank you all for the suggestions,i try not too feed my ally primarily on rosy golds,i also feed him lots of ghost shrimp,i hardly try dead things and pellets due to the fact that he never eats stuff that doesn't move and is at the top of the water, but i'm gonna keep trying until he does...
