false bottom...when or why do i need it?

compasscreek Dec 01, 2003 12:30 AM

i'm new to frogs but eager to learn. seems everyone uses a false bottom, why is this done? can't i just put soil, plants and a few "logs" in and mist regular(i know thats over simplified but you get the idea)? also what is the recommended sized tank to keep 2 leucomelas in?

The advantages to a false bottom are that there will be a place for excess water to drain. It also allows for a water feature in your tank.

A false bottom is not necessary though. My dart tanks dont have false bottoms. I just use a siol mixture. The thing about that is you do need to allow it to dry out a little so that excess water can evaporate (there is nowhere for excess water to drain).

In a false bottom setup you need to watch your water close so that you dont get a buildup of ammonia. In ther other you will need a water bowl that you will want to change out about twice a day to keep the ammonia from getting to high (your frogs will use the water as a bathroom).

i cut some PVC risers, and place on the bottom of the n tank. then cut out the egg crate materail to the shape of my "land" and whatever is not covered is the water feature. then cover egg crate with screen. add soil plants and wood features. and water and watch grow.

is this correct where and how do i add a pump, or will a water fall already have this?

Check out audiotaylor's link in his signature line. He has a nice stream setup with a false bottom. You can also check out my pictures in the photo gallery. The captions will tell you how to make a false bottom setup along with the pictures. I have a waterfall with a bog at the bottom.
