Another leesh question.

Usumbara Dec 01, 2003 01:29 AM

When people say "leesh train" (for tegus, obviously), do they mean that the tegu will actually stop if the owner stops? Or do they mean it just won't freak out if it has a string around it's waste/neck?

My (Columbian B/W) Tegu is only 15 1/4th inches, but I kind of want to fool around with it...better to start young, right?

I put a string around his waste and he didn't seem to mind it, but he would REFUSE to stop. He would just keep pulling and pulling. (It was on a linoleum floor, so it wasn't like he was putting a lot of pressure on himself or the string)

And by the way, I tried the tub thing (Put him in there before he gets a chance to bask) and got no better reaction. I guess I'll wait until he gets bigger and take him to a shallow stream or something.

I guess I haven't found a way to get them to stop walking. I can get them to start walking (like if they're basking) by simply picking them up then putting them back down. I can also get them to go a certain way by walking along side of them, if they start to head off a different way I just start walking on that side of them to kind of block the way and head them in the direction I want them to go. It should be noted that I usually don’t use a leash either so I haven’t had the chance to try to teach them to stop by tugging on it or whatever.

I tried the "gently tugging" method when Lex was a bit smaller, after about the 10th time he would give up and head a different direction. Lex is now 4' long about 15lbs and he goes outside with me without a leash as well (mainly because he outgrew his leashes) I do as you do, and walk along his side in the direction I DO NOT want him to go. It's amazing how calm he is outside. I would never attempt this with my Savannah monitor

Wow lex is getting big, congrats! How's the Savannah doing? Has he grown at all? I still remember those pics you posted many months ago, Lex is one fine looking lizard.

Boris is doing well, although I think he is finished growing at 29" I still love him though,he's the only "lap lizard" I have. Even if he's crawling around on the floor he will come back on the couch and lay on me. D'Argo has outgrown Boris. He was 11 1/4" when I got him in August, and now is 30", and he seems to like to hang out more with me than what Lex does.

Unfortunately, when I switched cages, I didn't have Lex's humidity levels high enough and he's had some shedding problems and looks really horrible (from the neck to mid-tail) I've kept the humidity up between 80-90% for the last month, and all the old shed is coming off finally.
