Shedding problems

jasonmc Dec 01, 2003 02:12 AM

Some of my baby snakes are having problems shedding. I have two mexican milks that won’t shed on their own without soaking. I breed the mexican milks. I also noticed that an amazing tangerine honduran baby that I purchased over the summer is now having a problem making a complete shed. All the snakes shed whole sheds in the beginning of their lives but now are having problems. Why is this? Can anyone help me with an understanding of what would cause this? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks: Jason

Tell us a little more about your setup... do they have a moist hide with moss to use before they shed? Do you spray them for additional humidity. I give my milks as much humidity as possible prior to each shed, and they always seem to do well. Good luck.

Probably a change (lowering) of the ambient humidity in your area. I agree with the other poster about making sure the snakes have a moist hide. Baby snakes are much more moisture-loss sensitive than adults.

Jason,

Now that cold weather has set in (at least in Cleveland) the forced air systems to heat most homes and apartments takes a significant amount of humidity out of the air - which often results in shedding problems.

A humidity hidebox (with moist paper towels) is a good idea. I often find that "problem shedders" can get the skin off themselves if they are put in a container with damp paper towels, rather than just water.

Thank you all for your help. I am currently putting humid hide box's in their cages.I will repost with the results.
Thanks again: Jason
