ok, we got him off of crix, now what?

velcro Dec 01, 2003 07:43 AM

It only took a little over 2 weeks but we finally have our juvenile off of live prey (crix & worms) as a staple. He still gets them occasionally for treats. He eats his greens well and his pellets too. My question is....Now that he has accomplished this, how do we get his necessary vitamins down?

If you got him off live foods the other way would be to dust his greens with the powder like you would the crickets. Calcium and d3 lightly dusted on top once a day if it's a young dragon & multi vitamins 1-2 feedings a week. Good Luck

because my dragon is a little over 1 1/2 years old, and I would still like to feed him crickets a few times a week, but he won't touch his greens or pellets or anything. Right now he's brumating, so I'll have to wait till he comes out of it to try out anything new. He's a little guy for his age, only about 17" long, so I think I might keep him on his protein diet for a month or so after he comes out of brumation to fatten him up, but I really need him to start eating his veggies.

I got my guy off of crickets (accidentally) by introducing kingworms (superworms) to him. He got to where he would just ignore the crickets unless one happened to crawl in front of his face - and then he might eat it.

I was worried at first, but he eats tons of greens and munches on his pellets. I also dust his salad greens with a veggie dust to ensure he's getting all he needs.

So, long story short...it happened by accident, but I'm happy it did. It's a lot easier (and quieter) keeping kingworms around than crickets.

You can say that again. I got really tired of hearing that chirping all of the time. Even if we hid them in the basement, we could still hear them upstairs. Enough to drive a person crazy!!!!

If he eats pellets daily or every other day, you don't really need extr vitamins. They are all in the pellets. If you are feeding a varied salad, he is also getting vits. form the veggies also. You can dust the salads once a week if you don't feel confident he is eating enough pellets.

thanks, that is kinda what I thought. He is a scarf monster when it comes to his greens and he really likes the pellets too. He won't eat at all if he knows we are watching him though. He must have bad eating habits!!
