Green Ratsnakes from Mexico....

JDM Dec 01, 2003 10:13 AM

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could give me any information on acquiring Green Ratsnakes from Mexico locales(legal of course). I have seen that Ophidiophiles has a locale and also rkreptiles.com. Is anyone else breeding animals from Mexican locales? How about legally owned animals from New Mexico locales?

JDM,

BTW, triaspis can be greenish or brownish depending on the locale. I had a group for a couple years, but I'm not working with green rats any more. My stock came from Alan Kardon, San Antonio Zoo. They were green and from Chihuahua. I believe he's still working with green rats. Not many hobbyists have gotten into this species, so there's not many being captive bred. William Gillingham might still have them too, but I don't know the locale.

As far as New Mexico stock goes, it is a protected species there. I don't think it would be legal to sell this locality, but I don't know if any are grandfathered, or anything. Also, I've heard that Arizona will be voting on whether to protect S. triaspis in AZ in 2004. We'll have to see, but it would mean even less people breeding them, as a number of hobbyists in AZ have them.

Good luck.....TC.

Yes, I live in Arizona and have kept Arizona locales that I collected in the past. I am now interested in acquiring some locales of Green Ratsnakes that will be protected from regulation from the Arizona Game and Fish. I really enjoy keeping the species and would like to be able to legally propagate and keep more than the 4 animals that the Arizona law allows for, in addition to sell and trade offspring.

Ok...I remember meeting you at Jerry's once.
My input is going to be "not" to protect green rats in AZ. I'd like to work with them too someday. Most of their range is inexcessible to collectors. Almost all are collected on roads which could be road kill anyway and probably puts hardly any dent in the populations. I would contact Alan. He's a good guy and can probably set you up. E-mail me, if you need more info. Later...
