Newbie: Got parasites

rikonigsberg Dec 01, 2003 10:15 AM

Hello,

Turns out my Uro has parasites after all My vet didn't take enough fecal samples the first time I took him in, and I just found out.

He's recommending a powder which I would feed to him with baby food.

Afterwards he says that I should empty the tank and clean everything (with a 1-10 bleach:water solution), throw away the sand and leave newspaper for two weeks.

Two questions:

1. How do I force a lizard to eat this?
2. Is he right about the tank?

Thanks, Rob and Josephine.

What's this powder? Every time I've gotten animals dewormed it was either a shot or a liquid. Both of which are pretty easy to get into a lizard. Well, in fact, my bearded dragon LOVED the liquid.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

Yeah, it's a powder. I'm going to mix it into some baby food and see if he eats it. Dunno.

The vet didn't even tell you what it's called? Or give you any directions for using it? Did he even tell you how much to use? Sounds like a ... ... ... flake!
He should say, this is x, give x amount by x method x times a day for x days... not 'here's some powder, good luck!'.
Oh yeah.. without strict cage hygeine, the lizard is just going to reinfect itself. My vet managed to leave that part out. Ask my bearded dragon, he'll tell you all about it.

No he did give me directions, I just didn't mention it in the email. Got to go so I'm gonna pass on describing it now, too. Thanks for the info!

Sounds like Panacur - usually for dogs they sprinkle it on their food, and it comes in individual packs for dogs of various sizes - one pack for a ten pound dog, another pack for a 40 pound dog, and so on. For turtles, I usually put in on a very tempting piece of food that I know they will eat all in one sitting.

Please tell us what is in the powder first. Some species are more sensitive than others to specific parasite medications (i.e. turtles may be harmed by Ivermectin).

As for the lizard, try puting it in peach baby food (for small babies - stage I) Amazingly, even strictly carnivorous lizards will eat peach baby food - but.....be sure to get a weight on your animal and calculate the dosage properly (and check if it is appropriate for lizards).
